FAQs

Tell me more about the StoryQ approach.

We generally have within us the answer to our own mystery, our own pain, our own problems, our own potential. When we are given the space, time and guidance to search for these answers, we start to tap into our most valuable possession– our own story. The practice of reflection leads to deeper introspection.

By verbalizing our experience, our journey, even our pain in a safe judgment-free space, it can start to lose its power over us. In order to unleash the power of our own story into our lives, we must learn how to tell it. By regularly taking inventory and practicing telling our authentic story, our emotional intelligence increases and we are able to move from being victims of circumstance to authors of our own lives. We are empowered. Every day we write a new page in our lives and we alone decide what that story will be.

Who is the ideal subject for a StoryQ interview?

  • People who think they don’t have a story to tell!

  • People of all ages who want to capture their life experience, but could use a little help.

  • Those who would like to create an authentic “this is me” piece for various uses.

  • People who are celebrating milestones and feeling introspective, retrospective and just plain ‘spective.

  • Those who’ve experienced a recent change, a loss or are going through a life transition of any kind.

  • You. Your story, whether you believe it or not is extremely valuable. It’s worth discovering, telling and capturing. We’ll prove it to you.

What questions can I expect?

Our questioning varies by use case. We’ll craft the perfect question set for your needs and our experienced Personal Story Mentors will conduct a dynamic interview to capture your story. More info on our core questioning framework found here.

Can I get questions in advance?

Yes, you can get a list of Q's in advance, but we recommend instead just getting a heads up on the areas to be discussed so that you are thoughtful and not rehearsed. You can redo any question you wish. You are in complete control of this process.

Who gets to see this?  How honest should I be?

Beyond the interviewer who is bound by StoryQ’s Confidentiality Guarantee, you are in complete control of the footage. The interviewer is not a journalist, but more of a guide to help you find your story.

As for honesty, again, this is first for you and only you. If you wish to discuss elements that you don’t want others to hear/see, you can choose what stays in and what is taken out as well as when your story is shared.

Are the interviews like traditional therapy?

No.  Traditional therapy, while potentially helpful for all, is especially vital for individuals with serious mental health issues.   Personal Story Mentoring fills the gap for those who neither need nor desire traditional therapy but can gain from discovering themselves through their own story.  It involves asking the right questions in the right order in the setting at the right time to help the individual find the right answers for themselves.

Why am I hesitant?

Because people are fearful of telling their own story and because they fear coming up short, not being articulate, not being profound, seeming self centered. They would rather have others tell their stories. However, as with all slightly scary things that sometimes push us out of our comfort zones, we feel pretty incredible after we’ve done it. And relieved.
